• I’ve not edited anything on my website for a while and suddenly see the message “Error Establishing a Database Connection” appear when I try to connect.

    http://www.marcbally.ch
My hosting provider is EasyGiga.com and I use Plesk 9.5.4 to manage the domain.

Apparently, this is a WP issue, because there’s a part of the website which is not managed by WP that is online and ok: http://www.marcbally.ch/index2.html

I’ve been having some issues while installing and posting, but since I didn’t even connect to my database for days, I’m surprised to discover this sudden error.
    I can’t even access the /wp-login.php page.

Any advice about what could cause this?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Is the host’s database server up?

I agree with fonglh, maybe this is a hosting issue. You may check you wp-config.php file if it still in the root folder of your installation and if it contains the correct info.

Thanks for your answers. I’ve checked the wp-config.php file and it seems correct.
On the Plex interface there’s nothing wrong either.

I’ve asked my hosting provider but my request is still pending.
The fact that the issue appeared without me doing any change is quite surprising…
(I didn’t even post anything for more than a week)

How could some data that hasn’t been edited suddenly not match anymore?

If you visited your website since your last login and it worked then it is a hosting problem. (or its hacked 🙂 )

I’ve asked my hosting provider but my request is still pending

You need to wait and see what they say. An “Error Establishing a Database Connection” message is just that: the database server.

The fact that the issue appeared without me doing any change is quite surprising…

That means very little; wait for a reply from your host.

Your other site is static and has nothing to do wth WP.

    Hi,

When I tried to go into my site: http://www.whistlerbaby.com, I received the same message: Error establishing a database connection

I have no idea what to do, as I am a computer moron.

    Can someone help me please?

Was the site working before? Check your wp-config file to make sure the settings are correct ie. database name, username, password, database location.

    Hi Zane,

Look, I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I am just a writer. I have no idea about where to even start looking for my wp-config file. I’m a little over my head.

The site was working last night, I’ve been having a lot of issues with porn spam going on my site, so I went into my account setting with DreamHost, and I think I changed my password, which I assume is what is causing a error in database connection.

What should my next steps be?

(Sorry to waste your time on this, but any help is very appreciated!)

Actually, your site now redirects to a site in .ru, so you’ve been hacked, too.

    See http://sitecheck.sucuri.net/results/whistlerbaby.com

See FAQ: My site was hacked « WordPress Codex and How to completely clean your hacked wordpress installation and How to find a backdoor in a hacked WordPress and Hardening WordPress « WordPress Codex and tell your host. Change all passswords. Scan your own PC.

There you go, thanks songdogtech. Whistlerbaby, you may find the help posts provided a little overwhelming, but give them a read through. If you need some more help just shout!

You guys rock! I have used your recommendation to sucuri and am getting the hackers out, and will try my best to check my wp-config file’s settings… I won’t close this thread in case I need help again.

    Hi All,

I got this error ‘Error establishing database connection’ when I tried to upgrade my WordPress to version 3.1.
    I did the following:
    1. My webpage for blog: http://www.your_domain_name.com/blog/
    2. The server was hosted by GoDaddy
    3. I logged into GoDaddy
    4. Navigated to My Account >> Web Hosting
    5. Clicked the button LAUNCH for the website domain
    6. That will open a new window Hosting Control Center
    7. Clicked on Databases >> MySQL
    8. Clicked ‘Manage via phpMyAdmin’ for the actual wordpress database name
    9. That should open a new browser. Enter the login details.
    10. In the table wp_options, I removed the contents for active_plugins and edited the contents of recently_edited.

Basically, for recently_edited, I removed everything except the one related to my theme twentyten.

    Bingo….!!!! My blog started working.

    Hope this helps

Hi, I’m having this error on my site now http://www.symphonyoflove.net/blog. I didn’t make any changes to the wp-config file. I wanted to access it about 3 hours ago and it was showing that till now. How can we check if it is the database server down?

Or anyone has any idea where else it may be broken?

Many thanks and your help will be greatly appreciated.

    hello everyone

    my website is http://www.abriculture.com/

I have experienced the same problem. I started up this website June this year thinking I would be able to finish it off in a couple of weeks. I had a friend around to help me start but she has now left to travel the world.

My website is under construction and has been out of action for all this time.

Can someone help me get access again?

    Jenny
